Question
Question: A woman has a husband who does not pray and is unconcerned about committing sins. She has children from him and she is a believer. What is obligatory upon her? Must she separate from him and leave him?
Answer
Answer: The wife is not harmed—legally—in her faith by the wickedness of her husband. What is obligatory upon her is to maintain her duties and the consciousness of her Lord. Her husband’s sinfulness does not diminish her faith or her righteous deeds. Allah has set forth the wife of Pharaoh as an example for the believers whose husband was a wicked tyrant, saying: “And Allah presents an example for those who have believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, ‘My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people.’ ” [at-Taḥrīm:11].
- If she can advise her husband without being harmed, let her advise him—gently and patiently—day after day, from time to time. With perseverance her counsel may have effect, for one’s companion influences his companion.
- She must also devote herself to the religious upbringing of her children, teaching them the religion, and not neglecting their education lest they assume the manners of their father.
