Question
Question: A religious student of knowledge wants his family to marry him off. However, the people of that land have a bad custom: the women hold singing parties at weddings, apart from the men. What should this student do? Should he forgo marriage despite his strong need for it? Or should he denounce the wrong with his hand and tongue—though the first to stand against him would be his father? What should he do?
Answer
Answer—and Allah grants success: The student in question should marry; he should not leave marriage because of what he mentioned. It is incumbent upon this student to denounce the wrong in the best way—with gentleness, softness, and forbearance. If that has an effect and the wrong is abandoned, then what a blessing; otherwise he has conveyed the proof to them.
He should not then confront his father with harshness and severity. However, he must shun gatherings of amusement and not attend them. Allah Most High said: “But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them; but accompany them in the world with appropriate kindness.” [Luqmān:15]
