Question
Question: If a wife is disobedient to Allah and persists in her disobedience, what is obligatory upon the husband?
Answer
Answer: If a wife is disobedient to Allah and persists in her disobedience, if her sin is adultery, then divorce her and be rid of her, as He says: “The adulterer does not marry except a female adulterer or a polytheist, and the adulteress—none marries her except an adulterer or a polytheist; and that is forbidden to the believers.” [an-Nūr:3]. And His saying: “Wicked women are for wicked men, and wicked men are for wicked women …” [an-Nūr: 26].
If her sin is other than that, what is obligatory is to guide her, admonish her, and remind her of Allah and His punishment, treating her gently in all of that.
If her sin concerns the rights of her husband, Allah has directed how to address it: “As for those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance, admonish them; [then] leave them in their beds; and [lastly] strike them [lightly]. But if they obey you, then seek no means against them.” [an- Nisāʾ:34].
Divorce is not obligatory if her disobedience is other than adultery.
Allah has also set forth an example in His Book: “Allah has set forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them, so they [their husbands] availed them naught against Allah; and it was said, ‘Enter the Fire with those who enter.’ ” [at-Taḥrīm:10].
