Question
Question: In our land, when someone dies, it is customary that the heirs erect a tent to receive those offering condolences. The heirs must incur expenses for coffee, dates, and meat for guests among kin, friends, and relatives—this is unavoidable. If some heirs take care of these expenses, may they demand reimbursement from the rest of the heirs?
Answer
Answer: All the heirs are obligated to share the aforementioned expenses of the tent and the condolence—provided they remain within customary bounds. They are not obligated for what exceeds that. We say this because the present heir who bore the expenses of condolence was compelled to fulfill what custom requires for condolences; had he not done so, people would have censured and belittled him and looked down upon him—and the first to censure him would be the kin who came to offer condolences and the friends.
