Question

Question: A man’s father died; he is the youngest of his brothers and is engaged in seeking knowledge, yet his brothers give him nothing to help him in seeking knowledge. He possesses nothing. He gave away what he owned to some of his relatives so that he might be able to take from zakat what would help him in that—knowing they would later return his property to him. Is it lawful for him to take the charity or not?

Answer

Answer—and Allah is the Granter of success: It is permissible for that man to take from zakat what will aid him in seeking knowledge, if matters are as stated in the question. His ruling then is that of a wayfarer cut off from his wealth.
