Question
Question: A woman may be confused about which to prioritize when there is a conflict between the husband’s rights and the parents’ rights: which takes precedence? Please clarify.
Answer
The answer—and Allah is the One who grants success: What appears is that the parents’ rights are more deserving of precedence. This is because Allah—Exalted is He—reiterated in His Book the emphasis upon their rights and stressed that emphasis to the utmost, coupling obedience to them with obedience to Him. As for the husband’s rights, He did not mention them in the Qurʾān except by way of indication, as in His saying: "So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance—[first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them." [Al-Nisāʾ:34]; and His saying: "And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable; but the men have a degree over them." [Al-Baqarah:228].
