Question

Question: Which type of Hajj is best for one who has not yet performed Hajj?

Answer

Answer—and Allah grants success: What is best for one who has not performed Hajj is to perform a single (mufrad) Hajj. This is the madhhab, and the proof is His saying: “And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way.” [Āl ʿImrān:97]. When the mufrid has finished the acts of Hajj, he should follow his Hajj with an ʿUmrah after the Days of Tashrīq. What we have mentioned is most in accord with—and most fitting to—the indication of the verse, for the verse made obligatory the Hajj alone, separate from ʿUmrah. Preoccupying oneself with Hajj at that time is thus more suitable to the verse and more in keeping with its meaning than to make talbiyah for an ʿUmrah in tamattuʿ to Hajj or to combine ʿUmrah with Hajj. Moreover, occupying oneself with what is more important and then what follows it requires what we have said: giving precedence to the obligation is more fitting than giving precedence to the recommended act. follows it requires what we have said: giving precedence to the obligation is more fitting than giving precedence to the recommended act.
