Question
Question: What is best for a layperson among devotional works on the nights of Ramaḍān?
Answer
Answer: If there is someone who undertakes teaching the common folk—as is the case in the Āl ʿĀmirī Mosque [Sa'ada]—then what is most fitting for the layperson is to learn with him to recite some short sūrahs and al-Fātiḥah with sound recitation, and to learn the prayer. When the admonition in the mosque is given, he should listen to it; then, thereafter, he should ask about the matters of his religion he needs regarding purification, prayer, zakat, and fasting. If he is a tradesman, he should ask about transactions that are dubious to him, etc.
When the admonisher has finished his admonition and the teacher his instruction, he should perform wuḍūʾ and pray the night supererogatory prayer—eight rakʿahs, with salām after each two—then pray witr, three rakʿahs. When he has finished that, he should remember Allah the Exalted with tasbīḥ (saying “Subḥān Allah”), taḥmīd (“al-ḥamdu li-llāh”), tahlīl (“lā ilāha illa-llāh”), takbīr (“Allāhu akbar”), sending blessings upon the Prophet—May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—and his family, and seeking forgiveness.
