Question
Question: A poor man wishes to marry. He has taken from zakat less than a nisab, then refrained from taking more. In this case, is it permissible for him to take more than a nisab—enough to cover the costs of marriage: clothing, adornments, wedding feast, and what follows from that—or what should he do?
Answer
Answer—and Allah is the Granter of success: As the jurists of the madhhab have stated, as in the marginalia, exceptions are made for the poor with respect to clothing, the dowry, and the like—even if they exceed a nisab.
On this basis, it is permissible for this man to take from zakat what will cover the expenses of marriage, even in a single payment. This is among what is excepted for the poor and does not render him “wealthy,” due to his pressing need—just as with a shelter that protects him from heat and cold, clothing that covers his nakedness, a sufficient amount of food, arms for combat, and the like. Allah the Exalted said: “And let those who cannot find [the means to] marry keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them from His bounty.” [al-Nūr:33].
