Question

Question: Is one rewarded who “reads” the Qur’an in his heart without his tongue, or who remembers Allah Most High inwardlywithout voicing it—i.e., running the words of the Qur’an or of dhikr across his heart without moving his tongue?

Answer

Answer: What appears to me is that he is rewarded, for the essence of remembrance is the remembrance of the heart, and the tongue is its interpreter. In the hadith: “Taqwā is here,” and he pointed to his heart". And the Exalted said: “Say: Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or disclose it, Allah knows it” [Āl ʿImrān:29], and: “Whether you reveal what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it; He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills; and Allah is powerful over all things” [al-Baqarah:284]. And in the hadith, he (may Allah bless him and family and grant them peace) said to the one who praised Allah after sneezing in prayer: “Praise Allah within yourself …”
However, Remembrance of Allah and recitation merely in the heart do not suffice within prayer, due to the proof indicating that (i.e., articulation is required there).
