Question
a question: There are large pools in many mosques in various parts of Yemen, and the people of these areas perform ablution in them all year round. However, the smell often changes due to the length of time and the lack of rain, and they have no water to drink except rainwater. Is it permissible to perform ablution when the smell is present or not?
Answer
Answer: And Allah is the Grantor of success: I saw in the explanation of the collection called (Al-Minhaaj Al-Jali) by Imam Muhammad ibn Al-Mutahhar - may Allah have mercy on him - what means: (It is permissible to perform ablution with filtered water according to the consensus of the Ahl al-Bayt (as). Based on that, it is permissible to perform ablution and purify oneself with filtered water as long as it remains called water and is called water, and it is not harmed by a change that does not remove it from the name of water. This can be proven by the words of Allah the Almighty: {And We sent down from the sky water in a measured amount and settled it in the earth, and indeed, We are Able to take it away.} [Al-Mu’minun: 18], and He the Almighty said: {And We sent down from the sky pure water.} [Al-Furqan: 48]. So Allah the Almighty informed us that He sent down for them and upon them from the sky pure water, and that He settled it in the earth. Therefore, what God Almighty has placed in pools, ponds and valleys is pure, otherwise the blessing and gratitude would not have been fulfilled by placing Him in the earth. This is with the knowledge that if water remains in the earth for a long time, its smell changes due to what breeds in it of animals, and the leaves and roots of trees, and what comes to it of animals and humans, and what it is exposed to of the heat of the sun, and what the winds carry. Yes, if the water changes in a way that takes it out of its essence, such as turning it into milk or coffee or something similar, then it is not valid to purify oneself with it, and it does not suffice; this is because purity is a characteristic specific to water and earth. Based on this, a change that is not like this does not prevent purification.
