Question: Is it permissible to purchase books of knowledge with zakat money and distribute these books to students—among whom are the children of the wealthy and among whom are Hāshimites?
Answer: Such a thing is permissible for the rulers of the Muslims and for those who act in their stead; for others, it is not permissible. If a guide (murshid) needs something of this sort for his guidance, he must first disburse the zakat to a poor person; after disbursing it to the poor person, it is then permissible for the guide to purchase with it the instructional books and distribute them to his students and to those who will benefit from them.
