Question

Question: If a traveler led a four-rakʿah prayer and forgot to shorten it, then remembered after the prayer while still on his journey, what is required of him?

Answer

Answer: He must repeat the prayer as shortened, and he need not inform the followers. Their ignorance is likely an excuse for them in following the imam in the last two rakʿahs—just as the Prophet (may Allah bless him and family and grant them peace) did not command the followers to repeat when they followed him in a fifth rakʿah which he (may Allah bless him and family and grant them peace) had added out of forgetfulness.
