Question

Question: A man has a brother who does not pray. Is it permissible for him to live with him in one house, sit with him, and eat with him, or not?

Answer

Answer—and Allah is the One who grants success: Keeping a distance from one who abandons the prayer is better and more fitting, due to Allah’s saying: “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.” [al-Tawbah:71] and “The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another.” [al-Tawbah:67]—and due to what has come in the Sunnah and in the words of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and others, warning against befriending the openly sinful, the evil companion, and the hypocrite, and encouraging sitting with and befriending the righteous.
Poets have spoken about this; among what has been said:
Do not ask about a man; ask about his companion
for every companion follows the way of his mate.
That said, a person may be tested with an evil companion or a sinful neighbor, and so on. In such a case, he is not obliged to rid himself of that companionship or proximity if that cannot be achieved except by leaving the house or by something unduly burdensome. There is no harm in showing him kindness and accompanying him in what is right, for Allah, Exalted is He, has commanded kindness toward relatives and neighbors.
