Question
Question: If a man or woman has artificial teeth fitted, is their purification deficient, such that they may only lead someone like themselves?
Answer
Answer (and Allah grants success): What appears to me—and Allah knows best—is that fitting artificial teeth does not contradict the completeness of purification. If the fitted teeth (or tooth) are fixed, they take the ruling of original teeth: they must be washed, and food caught between them must be removed. If the fitted piece is not fixed, then if it prevents water from reaching its place it must be removed; otherwise, removal is not obligatory.
This is indicated by what is narrated: that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—ordered a man whose nose had been cut off to take a silver nose; then, when the place became infected, he ordered him to take a gold nose instead of silver. It is not reported by the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—that any rulings of purification or otherwise were entailed by that; had there been rulings that followed from it, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—would have clarified them for the man who took first a silver nose and then a gold one.
