Question
Question: Is there any obligatory right in wealth besides zakat, or not?
Answer
Answer—and Allah is the Granter of success: The apparent conclusion is that there are obligatory rights in wealth other than zakat; however, they are neither quantified by a set amount nor limited by a fixed time. Rather, they are rights that become obligatory when their causes arise—such as the maintenance of one’s children and indigent parents, likewise indigent relatives, saving a Muslim from starvation, and feeding a guest when he descends upon people of tents (ahl al-wabar, i.e., desert dwellers) and the like. There are also rights that are compelled by innate disposition, and reason judges the one who neglects them to be base and deserving of blame.
It may be that the All-Wise—blessed and exalted—did not explicitly mention them, relying upon what sound human nature has settled upon of their obligation and imperative force.
