Question

Question: Is a pampered fasting person—who sleeps from after the dawn prayer until the time of ʿAṣr or after it, such that only two hours remain until the call to Maghrib—rewarded, even though he feels neither hunger nor thirst?

Answer

Answer: He is rewarded, so long as he has a righteous intention.
Fasting is abstaining from the nullifiers of the fast together with intention; whoever intends the fast for the sake of Allah and abstains from the nullifiers until Maghrib is a fasting person—whether he sleeps or not—for sleep is neither among the nullifiers nor among the disliked matters. Rather, it is among the permitted things in the daytime of Ramaḍān and otherwise.
If it be said: “It has been reported that the reward is in proportion to the hardship; and one who fasts while sleeping, as described, experiences no hardship.”
It is said in reply: The one who sleeps while fasting has not impaired any aspect of his fast, nor done anything disliked or forbidden—so there is no cause, then, for a reduction in the reward of his fast. However, we say: the fasting person who is taxed by hunger and thirst throughout the day—such that, when the time of breaking the fast arrives, this has taken its full toll upon him—his reward will be greater, while he and the sleeper are equal in the reward of the fast itself. The increase in his reward is in consideration of the pain of hunger and thirst and his patience upon that.
On what we have mentioned we may also say: fasting in the days of summer carries more reward than in the days of winter, due to the severity of fasting in summer and its lightness in winter—while the two are equal in the reward of the fast itself—with the increase in reward being in consideration of the pain and the patience upon it.
