Question
Question: A man’s wife fled to the house of their son. The father asked his son to return his mother to her husband. The son tried, but the mother adamantly refused. May the son force his mother to return to his father?
Answer
Answer—with Allah’s help: What is due from the son toward his father is that he exert his utmost to persuade his mother to return—admonishing her, instilling fear of Allah, reminding her of the husband’s rights—and to exhaust his efforts in that. But threatening or striking is not permissible, for Allah commanded excellence toward the parents and repeated and emphasized this in the Qur’an, and He commanded the child to accompany his parents with kindness. Threatening, intimidation, and striking them contradict that.
