Question
Question: How do we answer someone who says: “Allah, Exalted is He, only commanded those legally responsible to establish the prayer without specifying five prayers; thus it suffices for the legally responsible person to perform one prayer in the day and night, and thereby he would be complying with the commands of the Qur’an and fulfilling what the All-Merciful has made obligatory”?
Answer
Answer—and Allah is the One who grants success: The Qur’an; the five prayers in their set times; the prescribed amounts of zakāh on each type of wealth; ḥajj in its time; and matters like these—all of it has been transmitted among Muslims, generation after generation, with unanimous agreement upon it.
Those who transmitted to us that the prayers are five are the very ones who transmitted to us that the Qur’an is from the Prophet of Allah (May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) and that it is the Speech of Allah, and so on. If doubt is allowed to creep in concerning the five prayers, it would likewise creep into the Qur’an.
