Question
Question: A man married a woman, and his father and the woman’s guardians believed that the milk of breastfeeding pertains to the mother alone. They remained long upon that view until old age; then they heard that the milk pertains to both the mother and the father. The man and woman became disturbed about their case. Is there a way out?
Answer
Answer—and Allah grants success: If the matter is as stated, the scholars of the madhhab have said: the doctrine of the unlearned layperson follows whomever he conformed with. On that basis, the couple are not to be reproached. This issue—whether the milk is attributed to the mother alone or to both parents—is a matter of scholarly disagreement. Some of the Companions and others held that the milk is the mother’s alone, with no share to the father; others held that it pertains to both.
