💡Explanation of the wisdom of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): “If you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it.”
This means: If someone greets you, prays for you, or addresses you with a greeting, then respond with a better greeting, or at least with one equal to it. This is derived from the words of God Almighty:

“When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it or at least return it.” [An-Nisa: 86]

So, if someone says, “Peace be upon you,” it is better to say, “And upon you be peace, and the mercy of God and His blessings.” This is from the noble manners and an expression of affection. His saying, “If someone does you a favor, repay it with something greater,” means: If someone does you a favor or shows you kindness, do not simply reciprocate in kind, but rather reward them with something more than their kindness, if you are able. His saying, “greater than it,” means: increase it and surpass it.

This indicates the desirability of responding to kindness with greater kindness, so that affection and cooperation may spread among people.

His saying, “And the credit still belongs to the one who initiates,” means: Even though you have returned the greeting with something better, or rewarded the benefactor with more than their kindness, the primary credit remains with the one who initiated the kindness or the greeting, because they are the one who opened the door to goodness and were the cause of these virtues. The one who takes the initiative in doing good has the advantage of precedence.

✳️Question: We have a mosque near our house, but we refrain from praying there for fear that our prayers will be invalid, because the one who built the mosque is an oppressor and land grabber. Is it permissible for us to refrain from praying there?

↕️Answer:
If the mosque's land was usurped, then do not pray there.
