Question: The prices of qāt may be high. Is buying it considered extravagance and waste, so that buying it would then become forbidden for that reason?

Answer – and Allah is the One who grants success: The purchase of qāt is not forbidden for that reason; however, its purchase may become forbidden for another reason unrelated to high price, namely when buying it results in neglecting those one supports and failing to care for them. In the ḥadīth: “It is enough sin for a man that he neglects those whom he maintains…” But if a person fulfils what is incumbent upon him towards those he supports, then there is no blame upon him in enjoying what Allah has brought forth for His servants of good things, as He the Exalted said: “Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?’ Say, ‘They are for those who believe during the worldly life, [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’” [al-Aʿrāf:32]
