What is the meaning of “Do not curse time, for time is God,” etc.?
In those times, people attributed misfortunes such as death, calamities, poverty, old age, weakness, gray hair, and senility to time itself. If any of these things befell someone, they would curse time, believing it to be the cause. For this reason—and God knows best—the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to them, “Do not curse time, for time is God.” This means that the One who inflicted these calamities and misfortunes upon you is God. Therefore, if you curse time, you are cursing God, for He is the One who causes what you attribute to time. Similarly, if you say to someone whose leg aches, thinking it is from a thorn, “The thorn is a snake,” you mean that the pain in his leg was not from a thorn, but from a snake. You do not mean that a thorn is a snake. The same applies to what is mentioned in the hadith.
