Question: A man swore by a vow of a sum of money that he would not enter the house, then he regretted this oath, and he is poor and does not possess that large sum; what is he to do? And this house is his parents’ house.
Answer – and Allah is the One who grants success: What is obligatory for him is to please his parents and enter their house, if they will not be pleased except by his entering upon them. It is not permissible to fulfill an oath that involves an act of disobedience. If he enters, then let him offer the expiation for an oath, and that will suffice him. This has been narrated from many of the Imams and others; among those who have mentioned it is Abū Ṭālib (Peace be Upon Him) in al-Taḥrīr.
And in the athar (tradition): “Whoever swears an oath concerning something, then sees that something else is better than it, let him offer expiation for his oath and do that which is better.”
