[The Meaning of Allah’s Help (Victory)]

Question: Allah, exalted is He, said: “O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and make firm your feet.” [Muhammad:7]
Is this verse general regarding everyone who supports Allah, exalted is He, such that he must inevitably be given victory? And how is it to be interpreted in the case of al-Husayn (Peace be upon him) and his supporters, and Zayd and his supporters, and many others whose enemies prevailed over them? What is meant?

Answer: “If you support Allah, He will support you and make firm your feet” is general in regard to those addressed and others besides them, and what indicates this is His saying, exalted is He: “And Allah will surely support those who support Him.” [Al-Hajj:40] And Allah’s help, exalted is He, comes in many forms:
1. Among them is manifestness and gaining the upper hand over the enemy.
2. And among them is what Allah, exalted is He, related in His saying: “…Allah has already given him victory when those who disbelieved drove him out as one of two, when they were in the cave…” [At-Tawbah:40]; He, exalted is He, named the Prophet’s (May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) being kept safe from the polytheists’ capturing him or killing him—by his hiding in the cave and fleeing from Mecca—as “victory”, even though domination and outward authority at that time belonged to the polytheists.
3. And among them is what Allah, exalted is He, related in His saying: “And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.” [Al-Hajj:40]; Allah, exalted is He, thus named the occupation of the wrongdoers in fighting one another “help (victory)” for His friends.
- And the victory of ‘Ali (Peace be upon him), al-Husayn, Zayd, Yahya son of Zayd, and others among the callers to Allah, is embodied in the manifestness of the religion for which they fought, and their school of thought for whose life they were patient unto death. For it is still standing and alive until this very day, despite those who strove—of Banū Umayyah, Banū al-‘Abbās, and others—to efface it from existence, eradicate it completely, and erase it from the breasts of the Ummah. After they exaggerated in that and reached the utmost end in attempting what they intended, they returned disappointed, their efforts went to waste, and they died burning with rage, unable to attain what they wanted; and Allah refused except to perfect His light, even if the disbelievers detest it.
And up to this day, oppressive efforts and dominant powers continue trying to efface that madhhab and uproot it from its foundation, but they have not succeeded and have not prospered.
