Question: What is the basis in what is narrated from many of the Companions, of hoping for Allah’s pardon and desiring His forgiveness while they persisted upon sins—such as one who used to show enmity to Ali (Peace be Upon Him) and rebel against obeying him?
The answer—and with Allah is success—is that there is no basis for their desiring forgiveness and their hoping for pardon while they persist upon sin and rebel against repentance and returning to Allah, and their desire is nothing but wishful thinking and delusion.
This is if they were desiring and hoping within themselves and truly believing that; and it may be that what appeared of their desire and hope was an attempt to make people think that they were upon the truth, otherwise they do not, in reality and truth, desire it, due to their knowledge of what they are upon of opposing the truth.
