Question: Is it permissible for me to hire a maidservant instead of a male servant, since I fear for my family and children from having a male servant in the house, and I am in need of this?
Answer: It is permissible to hire a maidservant on the condition that her work and lodging are arranged so as to avoid mixing with men, such that the men of the household are safe from temptation. If she is not trustworthy, she must not be allowed to mix with believing women and sit with them. Nor is it appropriate that she be entrusted with raising the boys and girls, lest they take on her character traits. Allah, exalted is He, has forbidden believing women to display their adornment except to their women—believers.
