[Ruling on depositing money in interest-based banks without taking interest]

Question: Is it permissible to deposit funds in interest-based banks without taking interest and without paying the bank anything? And is it permissible to transfer funds through them?

Answer: No objection appears to transacting with interest-based banks in lawful ways by depositing in them and transferring funds through them; for it is well-known that the Prophet (May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) and the Companions transacted with Jews by buying and selling and lending—despite Allah Most High’s describing the Jews as consuming usury and illicit gain in many Qur’ānic verses.
- The followers of this school of thought have said: It is permissible to deal with the oppressor in buying and selling.
