Question

Question: If a traveler resolves to reside ten days in a place, but makes an exception in that resolve, saying: “Unless I get bored, or some need arises,” does he shorten or complete the prayers?

Answer

Answer—and Allah grants success: The scholars of the school have said—as in the marginalia to Sharḥ al-Azhar—that if a traveler resolves to stay ten days except if the caravan sets out, or the like, then that is not a firm resolve, so he shortens.
What the questioner mentions is close to this, but there is a difference between the two cases: the case cited by the school, as it appears to me, is based on the traveler’s resolve being dependent on someone else’s resolve—namely, the caravan—and whenever that is the case, his resolve carries no legal weight.
As for the case mentioned in the question, the traveler’s resolve is not dependent on another’s resolve; rather, it is his own resolve. On that basis, the closer view is that he should complete the prayers.
