[Must one repeat Ḥajj if, afterward, he was negligent about prayer?]

Question: A man performed his obligatory Ḥajj. Years passed thereafter during which he was remiss in his prayers: sometimes he prayed, sometimes he did not—i.e., he was careless about prayer. After those long years he came to his senses and repented to his Lord. Must he perform the obligatory Ḥajj a second time?

Answer—and with Allah is success: What appears to me—and Allah knows best—is that he is not obliged to perform Ḥajj again; for the question of whether one who deliberately abandons prayer is a disbeliever is disputed. One group of scholars said the deliberate abandoner of prayer disbelieves, while another said he does not. Matters that are thus disputed cannot be relied upon to pass judgment of unbelief.
