Question: Does a person incur sin by finding some believers burdensome, or by feeling distressed at sitting with him or the like? And does a person incur sin for what he finds in his heart of envy toward his brother, or for what he finds of love for this world?
The answer—and Allah is the One who grants success: A person does not incur sin for what is mentioned in the two questions, because it is not within his power to rid himself of such things. Rather, he incurs sin for what issues from him of statements or actions that harm another or cause him distress.
As for love of this world, it is an innate disposition upon which Allah created people, and it is not possible for the legally responsible person to rid himself of it by any stratagem. Hence Allah the Exalted said: “And indeed, he is intense in love of wealth” [Al-ʿĀdiyāt:8], and: “And you love wealth with immense love” [Al-Fajr:20].
Based on this, what is blameworthy and to which prohibition is directed is consuming what Allah has forbidden or withholding what Allah has obligated upon the legally responsible person of financial rights. Hence Allah the Exalted said: “O you who believe, eat of the good things which We have provided for you” [Al-Baqarah:172], and: “Say, who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of provision? Say: they are for those who believe during the life of this world, exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection” [Al-Aʿrāf:32].
