Question: What is the appropriate interpretation of His saying, Exalted is He: “And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees” [Maryam:71–72]?
Answer: The addressees in His saying, Exalted is He, “And there is none of you except he will come to it” are those who deny resurrection and recompense, as indicated by the beginning of the discourse, which is His saying, Exalted is He: “And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, ‘When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?’” [Maryam:66]. And His saying, Exalted is He: “Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees” [Maryam:72] is information from Allah the Exalted about the state of the Allah-fearing after He has mentioned the reports of the deniers. And “then” (thumma) has come in this place to indicate how far removed the state of the Allah-fearing is from the state of the deniers; as though He said: Do not fear, O you who are Allah-fearing, when you hear of the state of the deniers, for your state with Allah is not like the state of the deniers. Rather, you are in a place of safety from their threat, and Allah will raise you to a secure station in which nothing of the threat will reach you.
– And His saying, Exalted is He: “and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees” [Maryam:72] is information from Allah the Exalted that those who deny resurrection will be brought to Hell, then they will not be brought out of it; rather, they will remain therein for everlasting punishment.
If it is said: What is the secret and wisdom in inserting “Then We will save those who feared Allah…” between His saying: “And there is none of you except he will come to it” and His saying: “and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees”?
It is answered: Perhaps the wisdom in that is hastening and speeding to cool the heat of the believers’ fear when they hear the strongly-confirmed verses of threat; for it may be that, if the information about the salvation of the Allah-fearing had been delayed until the mention of the threat was completed, their hearts would have split apart and their souls departed.
