[Explaining Allah’s Guarantee of Provision Along with the Obligation of Earning at Times]

It is known that Allah has guaranteed provision to His servants, and we find that the Lawgiver has made earning obligatory in some situations, such as when a person has two parents who are incapacitated and in hardship. So is there any contradiction between Allah’s guarantee of provision and the obligation of earning?

The answer is that there is no contradiction between the two. Hence Allah, exalted is He, said: “And seek what Allah has decreed for you.” [al-Baqarah:187] and “And seek from the bounty of Allah.” [al-Jumu‘ah:10] The farmer casts the seed into the soil and then waits for the provision of Allah, and so on; this is seeking what is with Allah of provision. The worker is the same, and the trader likewise.
So let it always be in the mind of the person seeking provision that provision is from the bounty and grace of Allah, and that He is the One who guided to the way of seeking it and directed to its cause, and that health and well-being and the strength of the hands and feet are from the grace of Allah upon him. On this basis, provision is from the bounty of Allah, and all that is upon a person is to trust in Allah’s guarantee. The meaning of the guarantee is not that you abandon walking in search of provision and disable the means of earning which Allah, exalted is He, has made for you, O human.
