[Allah’s Apportioning of Provision Among His Servants]

A question about the hadith: “Among My servants are those whom nothing would set right except poverty; if I enriched him…” and so on – we may see some who transgress because of wealth, and some who transgress because of health, and so on. On this basis, the transgressor might argue and say: “My Lord, had You made me poor, I would not have rebelled nor transgressed,” and the poor person might say: “If only…” and so forth? If and so on.

The answer is that Allah, glorified and exalted, out of His mercy for His servants, has facilitated for them the means of obeying Him. Among those means is what He tests His servants with of wealth and poverty, and health, and so on. All of this Allah, exalted is He, has made for great benefits and profound wisdom.
Now, even though Allah, glorified is He, has made for each of His servants the means of righteousness and provided them for him, the servant may turn away from that, and choose obstinacy, and walk in the path of corruption. Allah, exalted is He, may choose wealth for a servant for the sake of his rectitude, while the servant then employs that wealth in paths of corruption. If the servant then says: “Had You made me poor, O my Lord, I would not have entered into corruption,” the answer to him is that Allah, exalted is He, is the One who knows best what benefits His servants.
