Question: Did al-Qadi Ja‘far ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Salam hold the view that the Imam after the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) is Ali ibn Abi Talib without any interval, and did he rule that those who preceded him were in error, or not?
Answer and Allah is the Grantor of success: What is well-known and apparent among the scholars of the Zaydiyyah is that al-Qadi Ja‘far is among the prominent scholars of the Zaydiyyah, one of its eminent figures and senior shaykhs.
It is well known that whoever does not say that the Imam after the Prophet (May Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) is Ali ibn Abi Talib is not Zaydi. Likewise, it is well known that whoever does not judge the predecessors over him to be in error is not Zaydi.
It would have been more appropriate to mention the motive behind this question so that the discussion could be directed accordingly. As for what appears in al-Khulāṣah regarding expressions of approval, perhaps it is from the copyist or the printer, or perhaps it is… or perhaps… and perhaps he—meaning the Qadi—held the view that the error of the shaykhs did not reach the level that would prohibit supplicating for them.
