Question: A man leased a new car for three thousand Saudi riyals per month. The car’s price is ninety thousand Saudi riyals. The contract states that if the lessee pays three thousand each month until the total of rents paid equals the price of the car, the car becomes his property. What is the ruling on this lease?

Answer—and Allah grants success: If this lease is not a stratagem for reaching usury (ribā), then there is no objection to it; it is a valid lease.
But if this lease is a screen for usury and a stratagem to reach it—such as when the car’s real price is sixty thousand, and the seller wishes to sell it for ninety, so they cast the sale in a different form—then such a thing is impermissible.
