Question: What is the ruling on someone who gives a present or a gift to a person for a purpose—namely, that the recipient will buy automobile spare parts from him—given that the recipient is an engineer who often needs parts?
Answer—and Allah is the One who grants success: What appears to me is that this is
permissible. A merchant may market his goods, entice customers, and honor them—offering hospitality, a gift, a present, a prize, drinks, and the like that draw them to him. Jurists of the madhhab have discussed gifts given for a purpose or for an implicit or explicit consideration. Among their rulings is that the donor may revoke the gift if the intended purpose has not materialized.
